Dojang Rules of Conduct

 

Etiquette and Protocol…

·       Black Belts, regardless of age, are to be referred to as Mr., Ms., or Mrs.

·       Instructors may be referred to as Sabum (Assistant Instructor) or Sabum-Nim (Instructor).

·       Master Instructors may be referred to as Kwanjang-Nim (Master).

·       Always show self-discipline while in school.  Loud talking, laughing and laying down in the dojang are not acceptable.

·       Always show proper respect to senior students and to each other.

·       Spectators observing class or students coming and going, you must respect the class and the students in training.

·       Upon entering and exiting the training floor, pay proper respect to the flag and dojang.

·       Students must memorize and follow the Student Creed and the Tenets of TaeKwonDo.

·       Students are encouraged to read and attempt to model the principles of an “Ideal Instructor” and an “Ideal Student” as expressed by General Choi Hong Hi, the Founder of TaeKwonDo.  These may be found on our website.

·       Do not wear make-up, perfume or jewelry (except wedding bands) to class.

·       Hats, gum, sunglasses, food, drinks (except water) and shoes are not allowed in the dojang.

·       TaeKwonDo is only to be used as a means of self-defense and personal enrichment.

Uniforms and Equipment…

·       Students must be dressed in a clean and proper uniform at all times within the dojang.

·       Special uniforms, such as STORM, SWAT, Instructors, DemoTeam, etc. should be worn only when acting in these capacities.  Otherwise, it is proper to be in a student uniform for normal training.

·       Patches, and their proper placement on uniforms, must be approved by The Academy.

·       Respect your belt by keeping it tied properly around your waist.  Never throw it on the floor.

·       All training equipment, including sparring gear and weapons, must be approved by The Academy to meet safety standards.

Locker rooms…

·       Lockers are available for rent at a reasonable rate. 

·       Students are encouraged to put personal belongings in a locker, when available, and lock it. 

·       Locker rooms must be kept neat and orderly at all times to show proper respect for fellow students and personal discipline.

·       If you do not have a locker, take all your belongings home every day.  Clothing left at The Academy overnight may be donated to charity.  Sparring gear left overnight may be placed in the “Used Gear for Sale” bins.

·       Do not leave money or other valuables in the locker rooms.  Bring them to the office while in training.

Safety…

·       Free sparring is allowed only the supervision of an adult Black Belt instructor.

·       Students must wear proper safety equipment when sparring.  The Academy’s insurance regulations and tournament rules define proper safety equipment.  See Kwanjang-Nim for current listing.

·       Students must understand that training in the martial arts is a contact sport and that all students have a responsibility to train with the safety of their fellow students as their primary goal.

·       Students must exercise physical and emotional self-control at all times, for everyone’s safety.

Belt Testing…

·       Your instructor will decide when you are ready for a promotional test.

·       Students must strive for good grades in school, proper behavior at home and a Black Belt Attitude at all times to be eligible to testing.  Students may be held back from testing until these are goals are met.

·       Testing applications must be filled out completely and given to your instructor in a timely fashion to be approved for testing.  Timely fashion usually means at least three weeks prior to your exam.

·       Students must meet the minimum number of classes required for each belt exam.  Consult your instructor or training manual for details on class requirements for testing.

·       In the interest of fairness to all, no student shall be allowed to test unless tuition payments are up-to-date.

·       Your instructor shall conduct pre-testing in class.  Students must be pre-approved in order to attend the promotional belt exam.  Students must attend the promotional belt exam to earn their next rank.

·       If a student misses the promotional belt exam, for any reason, they must wait until the next exam is held to promote, or schedule a private lesson for a make-up exam.

Demonstrations and Publicity…

·       All students participating in demonstrations, newspaper articles, magazine articles, commercials, etc. must have approval of The Academy before doing so.
